Size: Colonies can range from a few inches to over 12 inches in diameter depending on species and age.

The Toadstool Leather Coral is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly soft corals in the reef hobby. Recognized by its mushroom-like shape and long, waving polyps, this coral adds beautiful movement and a natural appearance to reef aquariums. Coloration typically ranges from tan and cream to green and fluorescent varieties under blue lighting.

 

Behavior & Role in a Reef Tank

Toadstool Corals are hardy, adaptable, and excellent centerpiece corals for mixed reefs. Their extended polyps create constant movement in the aquarium and provide a natural perch for many reef inhabitants. It is not uncommon for clownfish to adopt large Toadstool Corals as substitute hosts when anemones are absent.

 

Compatibility & Caution

Although generally peaceful, Toadstool Corals produce natural chemical compounds (allelopathy) that may affect nearby corals, particularly SPS species. Running activated carbon and providing adequate spacing can help minimize these effects. Periodically, the coral may develop a waxy coating and temporarily close while shedding its outer layer—a completely normal process.

Moderate water movement helps keep the coral clean and assists with its natural shedding process. Toadstool Corals are highly adaptable and can thrive under a wide range of lighting conditions.

 

Diet: Primarily Photosynthetic

Most of their nutritional requirements are met through photosynthesis and dissolved nutrients within the water column. Supplemental feeding is generally unnecessary but occasional broadcast feeding of fine coral foods may promote growth.

 

Tank Mates

Suitable companions include:

• Clownfish
• Gobies

• Wrasses

• Most peaceful reef fish
• Other soft and LPS corals with adequate spacing

Avoid housing with aggressive coral species that may sting or overgrow the colony.

 

Fun Fact

Toadstool Corals periodically "shed" a thin wax-like layer from their surface to remove algae and debris. During this process, the coral may remain closed for several days before reopening with even fuller polyp extension. This natural behavior often surprises new reef keepers but is completely normal and healthy.
