Identification
The Silver Molly is a popular and hardy freshwater livebearer recognized for its bright silver to pale metallic coloration and classic molly body shape. They are active, peaceful community fish and are an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarium keepers. Adult females are generally larger and fuller-bodied than males, while males are smaller and more streamlined with a modified anal fin called a gonopodium.
Silver Mollies typically reach around 3–4 inches (7–10 cm), with females often growing larger than males.
Behavior & Role
Silver Mollies are peaceful, active swimmers that spend most of their time in the middle and upper portions of the aquarium. They are social fish and do best when kept with other peaceful community species.
They are excellent additions to community aquariums and are particularly well suited to customers looking for a hardy, easy-care fish with interesting social behavior.
Mollies are also prolific livebearers, so mixed-sex groups can produce large numbers of fry.
Compatibility & Caution
Silver Mollies are generally peaceful and compatible with a wide variety of community fish. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or fin-nipping species.
They can be kept with:
- Guppies
- Platies
- Swordtails
- Tetras
- Corydoras
- Gouramis
- Peaceful Barbs
- Other Mollies
Because they reproduce readily, hobbyists who do not want fry may prefer keeping a single-sex group.

Mollies are livebearers, meaning females give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. A single female can produce a surprisingly large number of babies, making Mollies an excellent fish for hobbyists interested in observing livebearer breeding.
