Appearance & Coloration

The Sailfin Tang is one of the most visually impressive tang species in the marine aquarium hobby. It features an oval, laterally compressed body with bold vertical striping in shades of brown, yellow, and cream. Its signature trait is its enormous dorsal and anal fins, which extend outward like sails when the fish is relaxed or displaying, making it appear much larger and more dramatic. Juveniles display more intense contrast, while adults develop deeper, richer coloration.

Temperament & Behavior

Semi-aggressive and highly active. Sailfin Tangs are constant grazers and strong swimmers that require ample space. While generally peaceful toward non-tang species, they can be territorial toward other tangs, especially those with similar body shapes. Best kept as a single tang unless housed in a very large aquarium with careful planning.

Tank Size Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 180 gallons

  • Recommended Tank Size: 220+ gallons

Due to their large adult size and active swimming behavior, Sailfin Tangs require long tanks with plenty of open swimming room.

Placement & Habitat

Occupies the mid-to-upper water column and open swimming areas, frequently moving between open water and rockwork. A mature aquarium with extensive live rock allows for natural grazing and helps reduce stress.

Lighting Requirements

  • Lighting: Moderate to High

Bright reef lighting encourages natural algae growth and enhances coloration.

Water Flow

  • Flow: Moderate to High

Strong, varied flow supports their active swimming style and overall health.

Diet & Feeding

Sailfin Tangs are herbivores with occasional omnivorous tendencies.

Diet Includes:

  • Dried seaweed (nori)

  • Marine algae sheets

  • Spirulina-based flakes and pellets

  • Frozen herbivore blends

  • Occasional mysis shrimp

Feeding Frequency:
2–3 times daily. Consistent access to algae-based foods is essential to prevent nutritional deficiencies and aggression.

Reef Compatibility

  • Reef Safe: Yes

Completely safe with corals and invertebrates. Will not nip at coral polyps.

Care Level

Moderate to Advanced

Best suited for experienced hobbyists with large, established aquariums. Sensitive to poor water quality and prone to stress-related illnesses such as marine ich if conditions are not ideal.

Compatibility Notes

Compatible with larger reef-safe fish such as angelfish, wrasses, rabbitfish, and peaceful triggers. Avoid adding other Zebrasoma species unless the aquarium is extremely large. Introduce last to reduce territorial behavior.

Health & Husbandry Tips

  • Requires excellent water quality and oxygenation

  • Quarantine recommended before introduction

  • Stable parameters and a varied herbivore diet are key to long-term success

Fun Fact

When threatened or displaying dominance, Sailfin Tangs fully extend their fins, making themselves appear nearly twice their resting size — an effective and impressive natural defense mechanism.
