Identification

Rainbow Threadfin is a beautiful and elegant freshwater fish known for its exceptionally long, flowing fins and delicate appearance. Native to northern Australia and southern New Guinea, this species is particularly popular among planted aquarium enthusiasts.

Males display stunning elongated dorsal and anal fins with thread-like extensions, along with iridescent body colours that can include silver, blue, green, pink and purple hues. Females are generally smaller, with shorter fins and more subdued coloration.

Adult males typically reach approximately 2–2.5 inches (5–6 cm), while females are usually slightly smaller.

Behaviour & Role

Rainbow Threadfins are peaceful, gentle and social schooling fish that spend most of their time swimming in the middle and upper portions of the aquarium.

Males are especially entertaining to watch as they frequently display their extended fins to attract females and establish social hierarchy. These displays are generally harmless and add to their appeal.

They should be kept in groups of at least 6 fish, preferably with more females than males to reduce excessive attention towards individual females.

Due to their small mouths and gentle feeding behaviour, they do best in peaceful community aquariums with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates.

Compatibility & Caution

Rainbow Threadfins are excellent community fish and are particularly well suited to planted aquariums and peaceful nano-fish setups.

Suitable tank mates include:

  • Neon Tetras

  • Ember Tetras

  • Cardinal Tetras

  • Harlequin Rasboras

  • Chili Rasboras

  • Celestial Pearl Danios

  • Pygmy Corydoras

  • Otocinclus Catfish

  • Small peaceful Gouramis

  • Other Rainbow Threadfins

Avoid keeping them with aggressive, predatory or fin-nipping fish. Species such as Tiger Barbs and other persistent fin-nippers can damage their delicate, flowing fins.

They should also not be housed with larger, faster-feeding fish that may outcompete them for food.

Care Level

Moderate

  • Tank Size: Minimum 15 gallons; 20 gallons or larger recommended for a group

  • Temperature: 73–82°F (23–28°C)

  • pH: 5.5–7.5

  • Water Hardness: Soft to Moderately Hard

Rainbow Threadfins thrive in clean, stable and well-maintained aquariums. They prefer gentle water movement and benefit from heavily planted environments with plenty of open swimming space.

Floating plants are particularly beneficial as they provide shade and make the fish feel more secure. A tight-fitting aquarium lid is also recommended.

Due to their exceptionally small mouths, they require appropriately sized foods.

A varied diet should include:

  • High-quality micro pellets

  • Crushed tropical flakes

  • Baby brine shrimp

  • Daphnia

  • Cyclops

  • Microworms

  • Small frozen foods

Feeding small portions two to three times daily is recommended. Including live and frozen foods in their diet helps maintain good health, coloration and overall condition.

Fun Fact

Male Rainbow Threadfins are famous for their spectacular courtship displays. They extend their oversized dorsal and anal fins and perform elaborate swimming movements to attract females.

Interestingly, their flowing fins can appear almost like delicate feathers moving through the water, which is how they earned the name Featherfin Rainbowfish.

They are particularly stunning in planted aquariums, where their colourful bodies and elegant fins create a beautiful display.
