Identification

The Peruvian Blue Tetra (Boehlkea fredcochui) is a small, active schooling fish from South America, prized for its attractive metallic blue to blue-violet body and energetic swimming behaviour. Its reflective scales can produce a beautiful blue shimmer under aquarium lighting, particularly when kept in a larger group.

Adults typically reach approximately 1.5–2 inches (4–5 cm) in length. Their streamlined body and active nature make them an excellent choice for planted and community aquariums.

 

Behaviour & Role

Peruvian Blue Tetras are active, peaceful schooling fish that spend most of their time swimming through the middle portion of the aquarium. They are best maintained in groups of 6 or more, with larger groups producing more natural behaviour and a more impressive visual display.

They are particularly attractive in planted aquariums where their metallic blue coloration contrasts beautifully against green plants and darker décor.

 

Compatibility & Caution

Generally peaceful, Peruvian Blue Tetras make excellent community fish when housed with similarly sized, non-aggressive species. They can occasionally become energetic or boisterous, particularly when kept in small numbers, so maintaining a proper school is recommended.
