Neon Green Torch Coral
Common Names
- Neon Green Torch Coral
- Green Torch Coral
- Neon Torch Euphyllia
- Green Tentacle Torch Coral
Identification
Scientific Name: Fimbriaphyllia glabrescens
Growth Form: Large Polyp Stony (LPS) Coral
Size: Individual heads typically range from 2–4 inches when fully extended, with colonies growing significantly larger over time.
The Neon Green Torch Coral is prized for its long, flowing tentacles and intense fluorescent green coloration that glows beautifully under blue reef lighting. Its graceful movement creates a striking centerpiece effect and adds dynamic motion to any reef aquarium.
Behavior & Role in a Reef Tank
Torch corals are among the most popular LPS corals due to their vibrant colors and mesmerizing movement. They serve as excellent focal specimens and create a natural swaying appearance within the aquarium. While generally peaceful toward non-Euphyllia corals, they possess long sweeper tentacles capable of stinging neighboring corals.
Compatibility & Caution
Neon Green Torch Corals should be given adequate spacing from other corals, especially SPS and less aggressive LPS species. They may coexist with certain other Fimbriaphyllia species, but caution should always be exercised. Stable water chemistry is essential, as torch corals can be sensitive to sudden parameter swings.
Care Level
Care Level: Moderate
Recommended Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
- Salinity: 1.025–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250–1400 ppm
Lighting: Moderate to High
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect flow
Provide enough flow to gently sway the tentacles without causing them to remain retracted or whip excessively.
Diet: Photosynthetic with Supplemental Feeding
Although primarily sustained through photosynthesis, occasional feedings can encourage growth and coloration. Suitable foods include:
- Mysis shrimp
- Reef roids and powdered coral foods
- Finely chopped seafood
- Zooplankton-based foods
Feed 1–2 times weekly if desired.
Tank Mates
Suitable companions include:
- Clownfish
- Gobies
- Blennies
- Wrasses
- Peaceful reef fish
- Other compatible Euphyllia species (with caution)
Avoid placing aggressive corals too close, and ensure sufficient space to accommodate sweeper tentacles.
Fun Fact
Torch Corals are known for their dramatic flowing tentacles and are among the few corals that some clownfish may naturally adopt as a substitute host when anemones are not present. Their fluorescent colors become especially stunning under actinic and blue LED lighting, making them a favorite among reef hobbyists and collectors.
