Identification
The Mexican Turbo Snail (Turbo fluctuosa) is one of the most effective algae-eating snails available for marine aquariums. It features a thick, rounded shell that ranges in color from tan and brown to olive-green, often with natural banding or mottled patterns. Adult specimens typically reach 1.5–2.5 inches (4–6 cm) in diameter, making them larger than many other common cleanup crew snails.
Behavior & Role
Mexican Turbo Snails are renowned for their voracious appetite for nuisance algae. They actively graze on aquarium glass, rocks, and other hard surfaces, consuming various forms of algae including green film algae, hair algae, and some macroalgae. Their large size and strong grazing ability make them particularly valuable in established reef and fish-only systems dealing with algae growth.
These snails are peaceful and spend most of their time moving throughout the aquarium searching for food. Due to their size and strength, they may occasionally dislodge unsecured coral frags or decorations while grazing.
Compatibility & Caution
Mexican Turbo Snails are completely reef safe and can be kept with most peaceful reef inhabitants. They do not harm corals, fish, or other invertebrates.
Caution:
- Secure loose coral frags and rockwork, as larger specimens can accidentally knock them over.
- Avoid housing with snail-eating fish such as some wrasses, triggers, puffers, and larger hawkfish.
- May require supplemental feeding in very clean aquariums with limited algae growth.
Care Level

Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <20 ppm
Diet:
Primarily herbivorous.
Foods:
- Hair algae
- Film algae
- Diatoms
- Algae sheets (Nori)
- Herbivore pellets and wafers (if natural algae is limited)
Maintaining stable calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels is beneficial for healthy shell growth and long-term success.
Tank Mates
Excellent companions include:
- Clownfish
- Gobies
- Blennies
- Tangs
- Dwarf Angelfish
- Cleaner Shrimp
- Hermit Crabs (with caution)
- Other reef-safe snails and invertebrates
Avoid aggressive snail predators that may attack or consume them.
Fun Fact
A single adult Mexican Turbo Snail can consume surprisingly large amounts of nuisance algae and is often considered one of the most effective natural solutions for controlling hair algae in marine aquariums. Their powerful muscular foot allows them to cling tightly to rocks and glass, even in areas with strong water flow.
