Rainbow Dynamite Chalice Frag
Species: Echinophyllia sp.
Common Name: Rainbow Dynamite Chalice, Rainbow Chalice Coral
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Growth Form
The Rainbow Dynamite Chalice is a plating LPS coral that develops thick, undulating plates with raised eyes (corallites). Over time, it expands outward in layers, forming a vibrant, encrusting base that can grow into a spectacular centerpiece.
Coloration
True to its name, this coral explodes with color — a rainbow mix of red, orange, green, blue, and yellow across its surface, with glowing eyes under actinic light. Each frag develops its own unique color pattern depending on lighting and placement, making every piece one-of-a-kind.
Temperament
Semi-aggressive — Chalice corals possess short sweeper tentacles that may sting nearby corals during nighttime. Leave enough space between it and other LPS or soft corals.
Tank Size
Minimum 30 gallons for a frag, larger systems preferred for mature colonies to allow room for expansion.
Placement
Best placed on the lower rockwork or substrate, where lighting is softer and water flow is steady. Ensure it’s on a stable surface as the coral plates can become heavy over time.
Lighting
Low to moderate lighting (PAR 80–150) brings out the richest rainbow coloration. Intense light may cause color fading or tissue loss at the edges. The Rainbow Dynamite thrives under blue-spectrum LEDs for that signature fluorescent pop.
Flow
Low to moderate flow is ideal — just enough to keep debris off without disturbing tissue. Gentle, indirect flow helps maintain vibrant coloration and healthy feeding response.
Diet
Photosynthetic, gaining most of its energy from its symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits greatly from supplemental feeding.
Feeding
Feed 1–2 times per week with meaty coral foods like Reef Roids, Benepets, Coral Feast, or fine mysis. Target feeding with a pipette can encourage faster growth and more intense coloration.
Reef Safe
✅ Yes — safe for reef aquariums, though best spaced from other corals due to potential sting range.
Care Level
Intermediate — stable parameters, gentle flow, and controlled lighting are key to maintaining its rich rainbow hues.
Fun Fact
Each “eye” on a chalice coral is an individual mouth — meaning every eye can feed and grow independently! The Rainbow Dynamite’s vivid palette and glowing eyes make it one of the most sought-after collector chalices in the reefing world.
