Betta splendens (Marble Male Betta)
Species:
Betta splendens (Marble Male Betta)
Common Name:
Marble Betta, Fancy Marble Betta, Marble Siamese Fighting Fish
Origin:
Captive-bred (selectively bred Betta splendens from Southeast Asian lineage)
Lifespan:
2–4 years (with proper care and stable conditions)
Appearance:
The Marble Male Betta is a highly unique and ever-changing ornamental variety known for its unpredictable color patterns. It features a mix of contrasting colors such as white, black, blue, red, and sometimes yellow, arranged in irregular patches or marbling across the body and fins.
One of its most fascinating traits is the “marble gene,” which causes the fish’s coloration to shift and evolve over time—sometimes dramatically. A fish may change patterns, intensify colors, or even completely transform its appearance as it matures. Males typically display long, flowing fins (Halfmoon, Veiltail, Crowntail, etc.), which enhance the visual effect of the marbling.
Temperament:
Highly territorial and aggressive toward other male bettas and similarly shaped or brightly colored fish. Best kept alone or with carefully selected peaceful tank mates.
Tank Size:
Minimum: 5 gallons
Recommended: 10+ gallons for better stability and display
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
- pH: 6.5–7.5
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: <20 ppm
Stable water conditions are essential to support overall health and coloration.
Tank Setup:
- Gentle filtration with low flow
- Live or silk plants for cover and resting
- Driftwood, caves, and décor for enrichment
- Dark or neutral substrate to enhance color contrast
- Lid required (bettas are jumpers)
- Calm, low-stress environment
Diet:
Carnivorous
Requires a high-protein diet for optimal health and coloration
Feeding:
- High-quality betta pellets as staple
- Frozen/live foods: bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia
- Feed 1–2 times daily in small portions
- Occasional fasting day recommended
Tank Mates:
Compatible with:
- Peaceful bottom dwellers (Corydoras, small loaches)
- Snails
- Some shrimp (may be preyed upon)
Avoid:
- Other male bettas
- Fin-nippers or aggressive fish
- Bright or long-finned fish that may trigger aggression
Behavior Notes:
- Highly interactive and often recognizes owners
- May flare at reflections or perceived rivals
- Builds bubble nests at the surface
- Uses labyrinth organ to breathe atmospheric air
- Enjoys resting on leaves or near the surface
Breeding:
Bubble nest builder species
Male cares for eggs and fry until free-swimming
Breeding requires a separate controlled setup
Care Level:
Moderate
Special Notes:
- Color patterns can change unpredictably over time due to the marble gene
- No two individuals look the same
- Stress or poor water quality can affect coloration and pattern clarity
- Provide surface resting areas to reduce fin fatigue
- Maintain regular weekly water changes (25–30%) for long-term health
