Common Name:

Koi Nemo Galaxy Betta, Galaxy Koi Betta, Nemo Galaxy Male Betta

Origin:

Captive-bred (selectively bred Betta splendens from Southeast Asian lineage)

Lifespan:

2–4 years (with proper care and stable conditions)

Appearance:

The Koi Nemo Galaxy Male Betta is a highly sought-after ornamental variety combining multiple premium color genetics. “Koi Nemo” refers to its koi-like marbled patterning, typically featuring a mix of red, orange, white, and black patches similar to ornamental koi fish. The “Galaxy” trait adds a shimmering iridescent overlay—often metallic blue, green, or steel tones speckled across the body and fins like starry dust.

Each individual fish is unique, with no two patterns exactly alike. Males usually display long, flowing fins (Halfmoon or similar variants), enhancing the dramatic galaxy-like shimmer effect.

Temperament:

Highly territorial and aggressive toward other male bettas and similarly shaped or brightly colored fish. Best kept alone unless in a carefully planned, large community tank with peaceful tank mates.

Tank Size:

Minimum: 5 gallons
Recommended: 10–20 gallons for optimal coloration, swimming space, and stability

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <20 ppm

Stable water quality is essential to maintain vibrant galaxy iridescence and koi pattern contrast.

Tank Setup:

  • Gentle filtration with minimal current
  • Heavily planted aquarium or soft aquascape setup
  • Driftwood, caves, and broad-leaf plants for resting and shelter
  • Dark substrate enhances galaxy coloration contrast
  • Lid required (bettas are strong jumpers)
  • Low-stress environment with minimal reflection or flashing lights

Diet:

Carnivorous
Requires a protein-rich diet to support color intensity and fin health

Feeding:

  • High-quality betta pellets (primary staple)
  • Frozen/live foods: bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia
  • Feed 1–2 times daily in small portions
  • Occasional fasting day helps prevent bloating

Tank Mates:

Compatible with:

  • Peaceful bottom dwellers (Corydoras, Kuhli loaches)
  • Snails
  • Select small peaceful community fish (careful monitoring required)

Avoid:

  • Other male bettas
  • Fin-nippers (barbs, some tetras)
  • Bright, long-finned fish that may trigger aggression

Behavior Notes:

  • Intelligent and highly interactive with keepers
  • Often recognizes feeding time and movement
  • May flare frequently due to reflective or bright surroundings
  • Builds bubble nests at the water surface
  • Uses labyrinth organ to breathe atmospheric air

Breeding:

Bubble nest builder species
Males care for eggs and fry until free-swimming stage
Breeding requires a separate, controlled setup with conditioning and careful pairing

Care Level:

Moderate to Advanced (due to sensitivity of premium color strains)

Special Notes:

  • Each Koi Nemo Galaxy pattern is unique and may shift slightly over time
  • High-quality diet enhances metallic galaxy shimmer and color separation
  • Stress or poor water quality can dull iridescence quickly
  • Provide resting spots near the surface to reduce fin fatigue
  • Regular weekly water changes (25–30%) are essential for long-term health and coloration stability
