Species:

Betta splendens (Koi Nemo Galaxy Female Betta)

Common Name:

Koi Nemo Galaxy Betta, Nemo Galaxy Female Betta, Fancy Galaxy Koi Betta

Origin:

Captive-bred (selectively bred Betta splendens from Southeast Asian lineage)

Lifespan:

2–4 years (with proper care and stable conditions)

Appearance:

The Koi Nemo Galaxy Female Betta is a highly ornamental strain that combines multiple premium color traits. The “Koi Nemo” pattern features a vibrant marbled mix of red, orange, white, and black, resembling ornamental koi fish. Overlaying this is the “Galaxy” trait—fine metallic iridescent speckling in blue, green, or steel tones that creates a shimmering, star-like effect across the body and fins.

Each fish is completely unique, with constantly shifting marbling patterns that may evolve slightly over time. Females typically have shorter fins than males, but their compact body structure highlights the vivid color contrasts and galaxy shimmer beautifully.

Temperament:

Semi-aggressive. Generally less aggressive than males but still territorial, especially toward other bettas. Can be housed in sororities with proper planning, space, and close monitoring, though individual temperament varies.

Tank Size:

Minimum: 5 gallons
Recommended: 10–20 gallons (especially for community or sorority setups)

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <20 ppm

Stable water conditions are essential to maintain vibrant koi coloration and galaxy iridescence.

Tank Setup:

  • Gentle filtration with low flow
  • Heavily planted or aquascaped aquarium
  • Driftwood, caves, and dense plants for hiding and territory breaks
  • Dark substrate enhances color contrast and shimmer
  • Lid required (bettas are known jumpers)
  • Calm, low-stress environment

Diet:

Carnivorous
Requires a protein-rich diet to support coloration and overall health

Feeding:

  • High-quality betta pellets as staple diet
  • Frozen/live foods: bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia
  • Feed 1–2 times daily in small portions
  • Occasional fasting day recommended to prevent bloating

Tank Mates:

Compatible with:

  • Peaceful bottom dwellers (Corydoras, Kuhli loaches)
  • Snails
  • Some small peaceful community fish (with caution)

Use caution with:

  • Other female bettas (only in well-managed sororities)
  • Bright or similarly colored fish that may trigger territorial behavior

Avoid:

  • Male bettas
  • Fin-nipping or aggressive species
  • Fish with similar body shape or flowing fins

Behavior Notes:

  • Curious, active, and responsive to surroundings
  • May show mild flaring or dominance behavior
  • Uses labyrinth organ to breathe atmospheric air
  • Enjoys resting near plants or surface leaves
  • Displays subtle hierarchy behavior in group settings

Breeding:

Bubble nest builder species
Females participate in spawning but do not care for eggs
Breeding requires a controlled, separate setup with proper conditioning and pairing

Care Level:

Moderate to Advanced

Special Notes:

  • Each fish has a completely unique and evolving pattern
  • High-quality diet enhances both koi color separation and galaxy shimmer
  • Stress or poor water quality can dull coloration quickly
  • Provide resting spots near the surface to reduce fin fatigue
  • Maintain regular water changes (25–30% weekly) for long-term health and color stability
