Species:

Betta mahachaiensis (Green Mahachai Male Betta)

Common Name:

Green Mahachai Betta, Mahachai Betta, Green Blackwater Betta

Origin:

Native species (Thailand – Samut Sakhon / Mahachai region, mangrove swamps and brackish-leaning blackwater edges)

Lifespan:

3–5 years (with excellent care and stable conditions)

Appearance:

The Green Mahachai Male Betta is a naturally occurring wild-type betta known for its stunning metallic green and blue iridescence. Males typically display a dark brown to black base body with shimmering green sheen across the scales, especially under angled lighting. The fins are shorter and more compact compared to ornamental Betta splendens strains, giving a more “wild” and streamlined appearance.

One of its most unique traits is its ability to thrive in darker, tannin-rich waters while still displaying vivid metallic coloration. Subtle red edging may appear on fins depending on lineage and stress levels.

Temperament:

Territorial and moderately aggressive, especially toward other males. However, compared to ornamental bettas, Betta mahachaiensis tends to be slightly less reactive, though still not suitable for cohabitation with other males.

Tank Size:

Minimum: 10 gallons

Recommended: 15–20 gallons for optimal stability and natural behavior display

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5 (can tolerate slightly higher due to natural habitat variability)
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <20 ppm
  • Tannins: Beneficial (blackwater-style setup recommended)

Tank Setup:

  • Low flow filtration (sponge filter ideal)
  • Blackwater or heavily planted aquascape
  • Driftwood, leaf litter, and dense vegetation
  • Dim lighting to enhance natural coloration and reduce stress
  • Secure lid required (excellent jumpers and air breathers)
  • Natural habitat replication strongly recommended

Diet:

Carnivorous
Wild-type species benefits from varied, protein-rich diet

Feeding:

  • High-quality micro pellets or betta pellets
  • Frozen/live foods: bloodworms, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, daphnia
  • Feed 1–2 times daily in small portions
  • Occasional fasting day recommended to mimic natural feeding cycles

Tank Mates:

Best kept:

  • Solitary or in species-specific setups

Possible (with caution):

  • Peaceful bottom dwellers in large, well-structured tanks
  • Small shrimp colonies (may be hunted depending on individual fish)

Avoid:

  • Other male bettas
  • Aggressive or fast-moving fish
  • Bright, flashy tank mates that may trigger stress responses

Behavior Notes:

  • More “wild-type” behavior compared to ornamental bettas
  • Frequently explores vegetation and hides among roots and leaves
  • Builds bubble nests, especially in calm, warm conditions
  • Breathes atmospheric air using labyrinth organ
  • Displays iridescence most strongly under natural or subdued lighting

Breeding:

Bubble nest builder species
Males guard eggs and fry until free-swimming
Requires soft, warm, low-flow blackwater breeding setup for success

Care Level:

Moderate (requires more environmental stability than standard Betta splendens)

Special Notes:

  • True Betta mahachaiensis is a wild species, not a typical ornamental hybrid
  • Thrives best in tannin-rich, natural-style aquascapes
  • Color intensity improves significantly under low-stress, dim lighting conditions
  • Sensitive to high flow and overly bright tanks
  • Regular water changes (25–30%) are important, but stability is more critical than perfection
