Common Name

Half Moon Betta (Assorted Colors)

Scientific Name

Betta splendens

Origin

Southeast Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam)
(Most Half Moon Bettas in the aquarium trade are captive-bred)

Appearance & Coloration

Betta Half Moon Assorted refers to Half Moon Bettas offered in a variety of colors and patterns. When fully flared, their tail fin spreads to a dramatic 180-degree half-moon shape. Color variations may include red, blue, white, black, yellow, marble, koi, butterfly, and multicolor combinations. Each fish is unique in pattern and intensity.

Fin Type

Long-finned Half Moon variety with large, flowing caudal, dorsal, and anal fins. While visually striking, these fins require calm water conditions to prevent stress or damage.

Temperament

Semi-aggressive to aggressive.
Male Half Moon Bettas are highly territorial and should be housed individually. Females are generally less aggressive but may still display territorial behavior.

Tank Size

Minimum 5 gallons recommended.
Larger tanks (10+ gallons) provide improved water stability and enrichment.

Tank Setup

  • Heated freshwater aquarium

  • Gentle filtration with minimal current

  • Smooth décor and plants to prevent fin tearing

  • Live or silk plants preferred over sharp artificial decorations

Floating plants and resting leaves are beneficial due to the Betta’s labyrinth breathing behavior.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 25–28°C (77–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Nitrate: <20 ppm

Stable, warm water is essential to prevent stress, fin rot, and illness.

Filtration & Flow

Low flow only.
Strong currents can exhaust long-finned Half Moon Bettas.

Diet

Carnivorous.

Feeding

  • High-quality Betta pellets or granules

  • Frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia

  • Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily
Avoid overfeeding to prevent bloating and swim bladder issues.

Compatibility

  • Best kept alone

  • Can be housed with peaceful, non-fin-nipping species (snails, shrimp, small schooling fish) in larger tanks

  • Never house two male Bettas together

Health & Care Notes

  • Susceptible to fin rot if water quality is poor

  • Maintain consistent temperature and regular water changes (25–30% weekly)

  • Observe fins regularly for tears or discoloration

Care Level

Easy to Moderate

Suitable for beginners when housed properly with heat, filtration, and stable water conditions.

Signs of Good Health

  • Bright, vibrant coloration

  • Active behavior and curiosity

  • Full fin extension

  • Strong feeding response

Signs of Stress or Illness

  • Clamped or deteriorating fins

  • Lethargy

  • Loss of color

  • Refusal to eat

Fun Fact

The Half Moon Betta was selectively bred to achieve a perfect 180-degree tail spread, making it one of the most visually iconic Betta varieties in the aquarium hobby.
