Scientific Name

Appearance & Coloration

The Galaxy Koi Plakat Betta is a short-finned Betta prized for its striking, koi-inspired coloration. Patterns typically feature a mix of red, white, black, and sometimes metallic blue, resembling the unique markings of koi fish. “Galaxy” variants often have subtle iridescent or metallic spots, giving a sparkling or starlike effect across the body. Each fish is unique, making them highly collectible.

Fin Type

  • Plakat (short-finned): Smooth, streamlined fins allow for better swimming ability and more hardy care compared to long-finned Bettas.

  • Anal, dorsal, and caudal fins are proportionally smaller, making them less prone to tearing.

Temperament

Semi-aggressive to aggressive.
Male Galaxy Koi Plakats are territorial and must be housed alone. Females may be kept in groups but require monitoring for aggression.

Tank Size

Minimum 5 gallons recommended.
Larger tanks (10+ gallons) improve stability and provide swimming space.

Tank Setup

  • Heated freshwater aquarium

  • Gentle filtration with low flow

  • Smooth décor and plants

  • Floating plants and resting areas are beneficial

Live or silk plants are preferred to protect fins.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 25–28°C (77–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Nitrate: <20 ppm

Stable water is critical for health and color maintenance.

Filtration & Flow

Low flow only.
Plakats are short-finned but still prefer gentle water movement.

Diet

Carnivorous.

Feeding

  • High-quality Betta pellets or granules

  • Frozen/live foods: bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia

  • Feed small portions 1–2 times daily

Avoid overfeeding to prevent bloating and swim bladder problems.

Compatibility

  • Best housed alone

  • Can be kept with peaceful, non-fin-nipping species in larger aquariums

  • Never house two males together

Health & Care Notes

  • More hardy than long-finned Bettas, but still susceptible to stress if water quality declines

  • Regular water changes (25–30% weekly) recommended

  • Observe fins and body for color changes, clamping, or injury

Care Level

Easy–Moderate

Plakats are generally beginner-friendly due to their shorter fins and hardier nature.

Signs of Good Health

  • Bright, vibrant coloration

  • Active swimming and curiosity

  • Healthy fins and body

  • Strong feeding response

Signs of Stress or Illness

  • Clamped fins

  • Lethargy

  • Loss of color

  • Refusal to eat

Fun Fact

Galaxy Koi Plakat Bettas get their name from a combination of koi-like body patterns and subtle metallic “galaxy” spots, giving them a sparkling, starlike appearance that makes each fish unique.
