Betta Crown Tail Male

Common Name

Crown Tail Betta (Male)

Scientific Name

Betta splendens

Origin

Southeast Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam)
(Most Crown Tail Bettas are captive-bred)

Appearance & Coloration

Crown Tail Bettas are known for their unique fin structure with extended rays that create a spiky, “crown-like” appearance. This effect is most pronounced in the caudal fin but can also appear in dorsal and anal fins. They come in a wide variety of colors, including red, blue, white, black, metallics, and multicolor patterns, often with iridescent highlights.

Fin Type

Crown Tail (spiked, extended rays with webbing in between)
The fin rays extend beyond the membrane, giving the fish its signature “crown” appearance. Fins are delicate but more resistant to tearing than Rosetail types.

Temperament

Semi-aggressive to aggressive.
Male Crown Tail Bettas are territorial and should be housed alone. Females can be kept together in sororities but should be monitored for aggression.

Tank Size

Minimum 5 gallons recommended.
Larger tanks (10+ gallons) help maintain stable water conditions and give ample swimming space.

Tank Setup

  • Heated freshwater aquarium

  • Gentle filtration with low flow

  • Smooth décor and silk or live plants to prevent fin damage

  • Floating plants and resting areas recommended

Crown Tail Bettas enjoy plants or décor near the water surface for resting.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 25–28°C (77–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Nitrate: <20 ppm

Stable, clean water is essential for color, fin health, and stress prevention.

Filtration & Flow

Low flow only.
Strong currents can stress Crown Tail Bettas, especially males with long fin extensions.

Diet

Carnivorous.

Feeding

  • High-quality Betta pellets or granules

  • Frozen or live foods: bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia

  • Feed small portions 1–2 times daily

Avoid overfeeding to prevent bloating and swim bladder problems.

Compatibility

  • Best housed alone

  • Can be housed with peaceful, non-fin-nipping species in larger aquariums

  • Never house two male Crown Tail Bettas together

Health & Care Notes

  • Susceptible to fin rot and stress if water quality is poor

  • Regular water changes (25–30% weekly) recommended

  • Monitor fins for tears, clamping, or discoloration

Care Level

Easy to Moderate

Well-suited for beginners when housed with proper heating, filtration, and water stability.

Signs of Good Health

  • Vibrant coloration

  • Active swimming and curiosity

  • Full fin extension

  • Strong feeding response

Signs of Stress or Illness

  • Clamped or frayed fins

  • Lethargy

  • Loss of color

  • Refusal to eat

Fun Fact

Crown Tail Bettas are prized for the dramatic, spiked appearance of their fins, which resembles a royal crown, making them one of the most striking Betta varieties in the hobby.
