Identification

The Zebra Nerite Snail is a popular freshwater aquarium snail recognised for its striking black and yellow to cream-coloured striped shell. Each snail can have slightly different patterns, making them attractive additions to planted and community aquariums.

Typically reaching approximately 0.75–1 inch (2–2.5 cm), Zebra Nerites remain relatively small and are excellent for aquariums where hobbyists want an effective algae-eating clean-up crew without introducing a large snail species.

Behaviour & Role

Zebra Nerite Snails are peaceful, slow-moving algae grazers that spend their time travelling across aquarium glass, rocks, driftwood and décor in search of algae and biofilm.

They are particularly useful in planted aquariums and can help keep glass and hard surfaces cleaner. They generally leave healthy aquatic plants alone.

Compatibility & Caution

Zebra Nerites are peaceful and compatible with most community aquarium inhabitants. They should be kept away from aggressive fish and snail-eating species such as certain loaches and pufferfish.

Zebra Nerites do best in mature aquariums containing natural algae and biofilm. They should not be introduced to a newly established aquarium with little available food.

Supplemental algae wafers or other suitable foods can be offered when natural algae levels are insufficient. Good calcium and mineral availability is important for maintaining a healthy shell.

Fun Fact

One of the biggest advantages of Nerite Snails is that they generally cannot complete their reproductive cycle in normal freshwater aquariums. This makes them a popular choice for hobbyists who want algae control without an aquarium becoming overrun with snails.
