Description
The WWC PPE Favia Frag is a highly sought-after large polyp stony (LPS) coral known for its intense coloration and striking polyp structure. The “PPE” name refers to “Purple People Eater,” a reference to its deep purple to maroon base color, contrasted by vivid green oral discs and bright accents around the polyp edges. This coral frag is originally popularized by Worldwide Corals (WWC), one of the most recognized coral suppliers, and remains a staple among collectors for its brilliant glow under actinic and blue lighting.

Favias are hardy, relatively fast-growing compared to many other LPS corals, and adaptable to a range of conditions, making them excellent additions for both novice and experienced reef keepers. Their encrusting, dome-like growth adds dimension to reef aquascapes, while their bold color morphs create a strong focal point.

Size & Growth

  • Sold commonly as frags (1–2") with 1–3 polyps.

  • Colonies can reach 6–12+" across over time.

  • Growth habit: Encrusting, dome-shaped, and expansive over rockwork.

  • Growth rate: Moderate – faster than Chalice corals but slower than many soft corals.

Temperament

  • Aggressive – extends sweeper tentacles at night that can reach 2–3" (or more), capable of stinging and damaging nearby corals.

  • Needs adequate spacing from other species, especially LPS like Acanthastrea, Chalices, or Euphyllia.

 Reef Compatibility

  • Reef Safe ✅

  • Compatible with reef tanks but must be placed carefully to avoid coral warfare.

  • Adds bold coloration and diversity to mixed or LPS-focused tanks.

 Lighting & Placement

  • Requires low to moderate lighting (PAR 100–200).

  • Best color development under blue/actinic spectrum lighting.

  • Can adapt to a range of placements but should be acclimated slowly to light changes to avoid bleaching.

  • Place on substrate or lower rock ledges with room for growth and sweeper tentacle extension.

Water Flow

  • Prefers moderate, indirect flow.

  • Too much flow may inhibit polyp extension; too little may allow detritus buildup.

Nutrition

  • Photosynthetic via zooxanthellae.

  • Benefits from target feeding 1–2x per week, especially at night when feeding tentacles extend.

  • Accepts:

    • Mysis shrimp

    • Brine shrimp

    • Reef roids and powdered coral foods

    • Finely chopped seafood

Regular feeding improves growth and enhances coloration.

Behavior & Growth Patterns

  • Dome-shaped, encrusting growth over rocks.

  • Distinctive large polyps with neon green mouths and purple/red tissue.

  • Aggressive nighttime behavior with sweeper tentacles.

  • Under actinic lighting, polyps fluoresce vividly, making them glow intensely.

Care Level

  • Moderate – hardy and adaptable but requires stable water conditions and spacing considerations due to aggression.

  • Suitable for aquarists of all levels, including beginners wanting their first high-end LPS frag.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 75–80°F (24–27°C)

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 sg

  • Alkalinity: 8–9.5 dKH

  • Calcium: 420–450 ppm

  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm

  • Nitrate: 5–15 ppm (avoid zero nutrients to maintain coloration)

  • Phosphate: 0.03–0.1 ppm

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20–30 gallons for a frag; larger systems preferred for colonies.

  • Best in mixed LPS reef systems or as a collector’s coral in display tanks.

  • Requires spacing (at least 3–4") to prevent damage to neighbors.

Key Benefits of WWC PPE Favia Coral

  • Iconic coloration: purple/red base with glowing green oral discs.

  • Hardy and relatively fast-growing for an LPS coral.

  • Excellent collector coral; glows brilliantly under blue light.

  • Adaptable to different tank setups and nutrient levels.

 Summary:
The WWC PPE Favia Frag is a brilliantly colored, hardy, and aggressive LPS coral that makes an exceptional addition to reef aquariums. With its deep purple base, neon green mouths, and glowing fluorescence under actinic lighting, it quickly becomes a focal point in any display. Hardy and moderately easy to care for, this coral is ideal for both beginner and advanced hobbyists, provided it is given enough space to avoid stinging neighbors.
