RR Firewalker Cyphastrea
Species: Cyphastrea sp.
Common Name: Firewalker Cyphastrea
Origin: Indo-Pacific
Growth Form
Encrusting coral that forms a dense, textured mat over rock and frag plugs. Over time, it develops a beautifully uniform surface with raised polyps that give it a bejeweled appearance.
Coloration
The RR Firewalker is prized for its vivid red base and electric yellow to neon orange polyps, creating a fiery contrast that glows under blue reef lighting. Its colors intensify under stable parameters and moderate light levels.
Temperament
Peaceful — does not possess long sweeper tentacles and can be placed close to other non-aggressive corals without issue.
Tank Size
Suitable for nano tanks to large reef systems — minimum 10 gallons recommended for frag growth.
Placement
Best placed on the lower to mid sections of the rockwork, or along vertical surfaces where it can naturally encrust and spread. Avoid placing on sand or unstable substrate.
Lighting
Prefers low to moderate lighting (PAR 50–120). Too much intensity can cause color fading or tissue recession. Under actinic or blue LEDs, its fiery colors truly stand out.
Flow
Moderate, indirect flow is ideal — enough to keep debris off its surface without blasting the polyps. Proper flow promotes healthy tissue growth and coloration.
Diet
While primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, the RR Firewalker will benefit from supplemental feeding.
Feeding
Target-feed microplankton, coral foods, or fine particulate blends such as Benepets, Reef Roids, or Coral Feast 1–2 times per week for enhanced growth and color.
Reef Safe
✅ Yes — completely reef safe and compatible with most tankmates.
Care Level
Easy to Moderate — great for beginners looking to add bold color to their tank without requiring demanding conditions.
Fun Fact
Cyphastrea are night-time feeders — their tiny polyps open most actively after lights out, catching suspended food particles. The Firewalker variety gets its name from its glowing appearance under actinic lighting, resembling fiery embers on a reef rock!
