Red Fancy Copper Male Betta (Betta splendens)

The Red Fancy Copper Male Betta is a stunning selectively bred variety of Betta splendens, prized for its combination of rich red coloration and brilliant metallic copper iridescence. Depending on the individual, the metallic scales can reflect shades of copper, bronze, gold and even subtle blue or green tones under aquarium lighting, creating an exceptionally eye-catching appearance.

With flowing fins, vibrant colouration and an impressive metallic sheen, this variety makes a beautiful centrepiece fish for a planted nano aquarium or dedicated Betta setup.

Appearance

The Red Fancy Copper Betta typically displays a vibrant red base colour complemented by highly reflective metallic copper scaling across the body. The metallic areas can appear especially bright under aquarium lighting, producing a shimmering, almost metallic finish.

Individual fish can vary considerably in colour pattern and intensity. Some specimens may show more extensive copper coverage, while others may have stronger red coloration with metallic highlights.

The flowing fins can range from predominantly red to a mixture of red, copper and darker contrasting tones, depending on the individual fish and breeding line.

Behaviour & Temperament

Male Bettas are generally peaceful toward other species but can be highly territorial toward other male Bettas and should never be housed with another male Betta.

They are intelligent, curious fish that often recognize their keeper and will readily approach the front of the aquarium during feeding or interaction.

A Red Fancy Copper Male Betta is best kept as a solitary feature fish, although carefully selected peaceful tank mates may be possible in a suitably sized and established aquarium.

Aquarium Requirements

5-gallon aquarium is the recommended minimum, with a 10-gallon or larger aquarium providing even more swimming space and greater stability.

A planted aquarium with gentle filtration is ideal. Bettas appreciate areas of dense planting, floating plants and other structures where they can rest and feel secure.

Because Bettas have long, delicate fins, avoid sharp decorations and excessively strong water movement.

Recommended Setup

  • Tank Size: 5 gallons minimum; 10+ gallons recommended
  • Filtration: Gentle sponge or low-flow filtration
  • Heating: Required; maintain a stable tropical temperature
  • Substrate: Any freshwater aquarium substrate
  • Plants: Live plants are highly recommended
  • Decor: Smooth rocks, driftwood, caves and Betta-safe ornaments
  • Flow: Low
  • Lighting: Low to moderate

Recommended Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Ammonia: 0 ppm
  • Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: Ideally below 20 ppm
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

Stable water parameters are more important than attempting to maintain a specific number within the recommended range.

Feeding

Bettas are carnivorous and should receive a high-quality, protein-rich diet.

A quality Betta pellet should form the foundation of the diet, supplemented with frozen or appropriately sized live foods such as:

  • Bloodworms
  • Brine shrimp
  • Daphnia
  • Mosquito larvae

Feed small portions once or twice daily, giving only what the fish can comfortably consume within a short period.

Avoid overfeeding, as Bettas are prone to obesity and digestive problems when fed excessively.

Tank Mates

A male Betta is often best kept alone, particularly in smaller aquariums.

In a suitably sized, mature and heavily planted aquarium, peaceful tank mates may sometimes be introduced. Suitable companions can include certain small snails and peaceful shrimp, although individual Betta temperament varies and shrimp may potentially be viewed as prey.

Avoid fin-nipping or highly active species, as well as other Bettas and aggressive fish.

Tank Environment

A natural, planted environment works particularly well for Bettas. Floating plants can provide shade and cover while broad-leaved plants offer excellent resting areas.

Bettas are labyrinth fish and regularly come to the surface to breathe atmospheric air, so the aquarium should always have easy access to the water surface.

A secure lid is recommended because Bettas are capable jumpers.

Care Level

Easy to Moderate

Bettas are suitable for many beginner aquarists, but they still require proper heating, filtration, water quality and regular maintenance.

The most important factors for long-term health are stable warm water, excellent water quality, appropriate feeding and a low-stress environment.

Our Recommendation

The Red Fancy Copper Male Betta is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a colourful and distinctive centrepiece fish. Its combination of intense red colouration and metallic copper highlights can make it particularly spectacular under aquarium lighting.

We recommend keeping this Betta in a heated, filtered and planted aquarium of 5 gallons or larger, with 10 gallons or more preferred for an even more comfortable and stable environment.
