Identification

The Radiant Wrasse (Halichoeres iridis) is a beautiful and colourful marine wrasse admired for its vibrant body coloration, active swimming behaviour, and usefulness as a natural predator of certain aquarium pests. Native to the Western Indian Ocean, particularly the waters around East Africa and Madagascar, this species displays a striking combination of green, orange, red, and yellow markings. Its coloration can vary with age, sex, and individual development, with mature males often displaying more intense colours and distinctive facial markings. Adults typically reach 4–5 inches (10–13 cm) in length.

Behavior & Role

The Radiant Wrasse is an active, curious, and generally peaceful fish that spends much of its day exploring live rock and searching for small invertebrates. Like other members of the Halichoeres genus, it is a natural hunter and may help control certain unwanted invertebrates, including small pyramidellid snails and other tiny organisms. It is a diurnal species, meaning it is active during the day and typically buries itself in the sand at night to sleep. A fine-sand bed is essential for its natural sleeping and resting behaviour.

Compatibility & Caution

The Radiant Wrasse is generally considered reef safe with caution. It is usually compatible with corals and many common reef fish, but its predatory feeding behaviour means that small ornamental invertebrates may be at risk.

It is compatible with:

  • Tangs
  • Clownfish
  • Anthias
  • Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
  • Larger peaceful Gobies
  • Blennies
  • Cardinalfish
  • Chromis
  • Rabbitfish
  • Other similarly sized, peaceful reef fish

Exercise caution when keeping it with ornamental shrimp, small crabs, tiny snails, and other small invertebrates. Avoid housing it with highly aggressive wrasses or fish that may bully it. A secure, tight-fitting aquarium lid is recommended because wrasses can jump, particularly when startled.

Care Level

Moderate

  • Tank Size: Minimum 55 gallons; 75 gallons or larger is preferable for long-term care
  • Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
  • Salinity: 1.023–1.026
  • pH: 8.1–8.4

A mature aquarium with stable water parameters, plenty of live rock, open swimming space, and a fine-sand bed is ideal. Provide approximately 2 inches or more of suitable sand where possible, allowing the fish to bury itself comfortably at night. Avoid coarse or sharp substrate that could injure its body while burrowing.

Feed a varied, protein-rich diet consisting of:

  • Frozen mysis shrimp
  • Enriched brine shrimp
  • Chopped marine seafood
  • Calanus
  • Quality marine pellets
  • Other small meaty frozen foods

Feed at least once or twice daily, ensuring the wrasse receives sufficient food without excessive competition. A varied diet helps maintain its vibrant coloration and overall condition.

Tank Mates

Excellent companions include:

  • Tangs
  • Clownfish
  • Anthias
  • Fairy & Flasher Wrasses
  • Peaceful larger Gobies
  • Blennies
  • Cardinalfish
  • Chromis
  • Rabbitfish
  • Other peaceful reef fish of similar size

Avoid housing it with very small ornamental shrimp, tiny crabs, and other invertebrates that may be viewed as prey. Take care when combining it with other wrasses, particularly species of similar appearance or those that are highly territorial.

Fun Fact

The Radiant Wrasse belongs to the Halichoeres genus, a group of wrasses known for their active hunting behaviour and ability to bury themselves in sand for the night. In the aquarium, this fascinating behaviour makes a sand bed more than just decoration—it provides an essential part of the fish's natural sleeping routine. Its combination of brilliant colours and natural pest-hunting behaviour makes it an appealing choice for larger marine aquariums.
