JF Pink Boobies Chalice Coral (Echinophyllia sp.)

Description:
The JF Pink Boobies Chalice Coral is a collector’s favorite among chalice enthusiasts, known for its vivid neon pink “boobies” (raised mouths) that contrast beautifully against its deep teal to purple base. This signature color combination, developed by Jason Fox (JF), makes it one of the most sought-after designer chalice corals in the hobby. Its encrusting growth pattern forms smooth, undulating plates that add incredible texture and color depth to reef displays.

Care Level: Moderate
While hardy once established, this coral requires stable conditions and gradual acclimation to light and flow. Suitable for intermediate to advanced reef keepers who maintain consistent water parameters.

Lighting Requirements:
Low to moderate lighting (PAR 60–120) is ideal. Too much light can cause fading or bleaching, while actinic and blue LED spectrums bring out its brightest neon pinks and purples. Start low and slowly adjust as it acclimates to your tank.

Water Flow:
Low to moderate flow is preferred. Gentle, indirect currents help prevent detritus buildup while allowing full polyp extension and healthy tissue growth. Avoid direct strong flow, which can cause tissue recession along the edges.

Placement:
Best placed on the bottom or lower-middle areas of the tank, on a flat or slightly sloped rock where it can encrust outward. Allow ample space between it and neighboring corals—chalices can extend sweeper tentacles at night to defend their territory.

Feeding:
Though photosynthetic, the JF Pink Boobies Chalice benefits greatly from target feeding 1–2 times weekly. Offer small meaty foods like reef roids, mysis shrimp, or coral pellets when its feeding tentacles are extended (typically at night).

Growth & Propagation:
This coral encrusts slowly but steadily, forming new ridges and mouths as it expands. Fragging should be done carefully with a coral saw to avoid tissue tearing. With patience, small frags can grow into dazzling display colonies over time.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)

  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026

  • pH: 8.1–8.4

  • Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH

  • Calcium: 420–450 ppm

  • Magnesium: 1300–1400 ppm

Behavior & Compatibility:
Semi-aggressive. Chalices like the JF Pink Boobies possess stinging tentacles that can harm nearby corals, especially other LPS or encrusting species. Maintain space around it, but it coexists peacefully with non-touching corals and most reef-safe fish and invertebrates.

Highlights:
✅ Vibrant neon pink “boobies” contrasted on a rich teal/purple base
✅ Rare and highly prized Jason Fox strain
✅ Fluoresces intensely under actinic lighting
✅ Excellent for experienced reefers seeking standout showpieces

 Fun Facts

  • Designer lineage: “JF” stands for Jason Fox, a legendary coral cultivator known for creating high-end, vividly colored coral strains.

  • Name origin: The coral earned its quirky name because of its bright, bubble-like pink mouths that resemble little “boobies.”

  • Glows under blue light: Its pink pigments fluoresce intensely, giving an almost glowing, lava-like effect under strong actinic lighting.

  • Chalice family traits: Chalices are known for their slow, encrusting growth and colorful, often psychedelic patterns.

  • Nighttime defense: Like many LPS, this coral sends out long sweeper tentacles at night to protect its territory.

  • Patience pays off: Though slow-growing, it rewards reefers with unmatched color saturation and a truly unique centerpiece coral.

  • Great for frag collectors: Its stable color pattern makes it a consistent performer in coral trades and collections.

  • Photography favorite: The JF Pink Boobies’ fluorescent pigments make it a star in coral photography under blue-spectrum lighting.
