Appearance & Coloration
The Eibli Angelfish is a striking dwarf angelfish known for its bold contrast and clean patterning. It features a creamy white to pale yellow body accented by horizontal orange striping along the flanks and a distinct jet-black caudal (tail) fin, which gives this species its Blacktail nickname. Subtle blue highlights may appear along the fin edges under strong reef lighting, making this fish visually impressive without being overly flashy.
Temperament & Behavior
Semi-aggressive, especially as it matures. Eibli Angelfish are active swimmers and can become territorial, particularly toward other dwarf angelfish or similarly shaped fish. Best kept singly unless housed in a very large aquarium with careful introduction. With appropriate tank mates and ample rockwork, they can coexist well in mixed reef or fish-only systems.
Tank Size Requirements
-
Minimum Tank Size: 70 gallons
-
Recommended Tank Size: 90+ gallons
A mature aquarium with abundant live rock is essential to support natural grazing behavior and reduce aggression.
Placement & Habitat
Eibli Angelfish spend most of their time weaving in and out of rockwork, grazing on algae and biofilm. They appreciate caves, ledges, and crevices that provide both shelter and grazing surfaces.
Lighting Requirements
-
Lighting: Moderate to High
They adapt well to standard reef lighting and benefit from well-lit rock surfaces for algae growth.
Water Flow
-
Flow: Moderate
Provide varied flow patterns that allow both active swimming and calm resting zones.
Diet & Feeding
Eibli Angelfish are omnivores with a strong need for plant-based matter.
Diet Includes:
-
Marine algae and seaweed (nori)
-
Spirulina-based flakes and pellets
-
Mysis shrimp
-
Brine shrimp
-
Angelfish-specific frozen foods with sponge matter
Feeding Frequency:
2–3 small feedings daily to maintain coloration and health.
Reef Compatibility
-
Reef Safe: With Caution
May nip at large-polyp stony corals, soft corals, zoanthids, and clam mantles. Individual behavior varies; best suited for mixed reefs or aquariums where minor coral nipping is acceptable.
Care Level
Moderate
Requires a stable, mature system, high water quality, and a varied diet. Not recommended for brand-new aquariums.
Compatibility Notes
Compatible with larger, semi-aggressive reef fish such as tangs, wrasses, dwarf tangs, and peaceful triggers. Avoid housing with other dwarf angelfish unless the tank is very large. Introduce cautiously with shy or passive species.
Fun Fact
Like all dwarf angelfish, Eibli Angelfish are protogynous hermaphrodites — individuals can change sex from female to male depending on social hierarchy.
