Dumbo White Female Betta (Betta splendens)

The Dumbo White Female Betta is an elegant and distinctive variety of Betta splendens, recognized for its clean white to pearly-white colouration and characteristic oversized Dumbo pectoral fins.

Unlike the extremely long flowing finnage often associated with male Bettas, females generally have shorter, more practical fins, giving them a compact and active appearance. The enlarged Dumbo pectoral fins remain the defining feature, creating an attractive “elephant ear” appearance as the fish swims.

With its bright colouration, graceful movement and unique finnage, the Dumbo White Female Betta makes a beautiful addition to a planted freshwater aquarium.

Appearance

The Dumbo White Female Betta typically displays a white, pearly-white or lightly translucent body, sometimes with subtle cream or iridescent highlights.

Her most distinctive feature is the pair of enlarged Dumbo pectoral fins, which are considerably larger than those found on standard Bettas. These fins can be particularly noticeable when the fish is swimming or displaying.

Female Bettas generally have shorter caudal, dorsal and anal fins than males, giving them a more compact profile and often allowing them to move more actively through the aquarium.

Individual fish can vary in body shape, fin development, colour intensity and iridescence.

Behaviour & Temperament

Female Bettas are generally active, curious and personable freshwater fish. They can be less territorial than males, although individual temperament varies considerably.

Females can still display territorial behaviour, particularly toward other Bettas. If kept with other female Bettas, a carefully planned setup with sufficient space, visual barriers and plenty of cover is important.

For the simplest and most predictable setup, a single female Betta can be kept as a feature fish.

Aquarium Requirements

5-gallon aquarium is the recommended minimum, while a 10-gallon or larger aquarium provides additional swimming space and improved water stability.

A planted aquarium is ideal. Live plants, floating vegetation and smooth decorations provide hiding areas and enrichment while helping the fish feel secure.

Gentle filtration is recommended. Although females generally have shorter fins than males, Bettas still prefer relatively calm water movement.

Recommended Setup

  • Tank Size: 5 gallons minimum; 10+ gallons recommended
  • Filtration: Gentle sponge filter or low-flow filtration
  • Heating: Required
  • Substrate: Any suitable freshwater aquarium substrate
  • Plants: Live plants highly recommended
  • Decor: Smooth rocks, driftwood, caves and Betta-safe ornaments
  • Flow: Low
  • Lighting: Low to moderate
  • Lid: Recommended, as Bettas can jump

Recommended Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Ammonia: 0 ppm
  • Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: Ideally below 20 ppm
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

Stable and clean water is more important than maintaining an exact value within the recommended range.

Regular partial water changes and good aquarium maintenance will help maintain long-term health and vibrant colouration.

Feeding

Bettas are carnivorous and benefit from a high-protein diet.

A quality Betta pellet can form the staple of the diet, supplemented with frozen or appropriately sized live foods such as:

  • Bloodworms
  • Brine shrimp
  • Daphnia
  • Mosquito larvae

Feed small portions once or twice daily, providing only what the fish can comfortably consume.

Avoid overfeeding, as Bettas have small stomachs and can readily become overweight.

Tank Mates

A female Betta can be kept successfully as a solitary feature fish and this is often the simplest option.

In a mature, suitably sized and well-planted aquarium, peaceful community fish may sometimes be suitable tank mates. Peaceful snails are generally a good option, while shrimp may be possible depending on the individual Betta's temperament.

Female Bettas should not automatically be assumed to be compatible with other females. If keeping multiple females together, adequate space, cover and careful monitoring are essential.

Avoid aggressive, highly active or fin-nipping species.

Tank Environment

The Dumbo White Female Betta will thrive in a calm, planted aquarium with plenty of natural cover.

Live plants and floating vegetation can provide shade and security, while broad-leaved plants and smooth décor create useful resting and hiding areas.

As a labyrinth fish, Betta splendens regularly comes to the surface to breathe atmospheric air. Ensure the surface remains accessible and avoid excessive water agitation.

A secure lid is recommended to prevent jumping.

Care Level

Easy to Moderate

Female Bettas are relatively hardy when kept in a properly established aquarium with stable temperature and good water quality.

Providing a heated aquarium, gentle filtration, appropriate nutrition and regular maintenance will help ensure a healthy and active fish.

Our Recommendation

The Dumbo White Female Betta is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a bright, elegant and distinctive freshwater fish.

Her combination of clean white colouration, enlarged Dumbo pectoral fins and active female Betta personalitymakes her a beautiful addition to a planted aquarium.

We recommend keeping this Betta in a heated, filtered and planted aquarium of 5 gallons or larger, with a 10-gallon or larger aquarium preferred for greater stability and swimming space.
