Scientific Name: Turbo coronatus
Identification
The Crowned Turbo Snail is a marine gastropod mollusc belonging to the Turbinidae family. It is recognized by its thick, rounded, spiral-shaped shell, which often features a distinctive crown-like appearance created by raised ridges and knobby projections.
Its shell is typically grey, brown, greenish or olive-coloured, sometimes with lighter markings and a rough, textured surface. The shell is sturdy and heavy, providing protection from predators.
Like other turbo snails, it has a muscular foot that allows it to grip firmly onto rocks, aquarium glass and other hard surfaces while grazing on algae.
Depending on the specimen and collection location, adult shell sizes can reach approximately 2–3 inches.
Behaviour & Role
The Crowned Turbo Snail is an active algae-grazing invertebrate that spends most of its time moving across aquarium rockwork and glass in search of algae.
It is particularly useful for controlling unwanted film algae and certain types of green algae, making it a valuable addition to marine clean-up crews.
Unlike many smaller snails, turbo snails have a relatively strong muscular foot and can firmly attach themselves to surfaces. They are generally peaceful and do not bother fish, corals or other aquarium inhabitants.
However, their relatively large and heavy shells mean they can occasionally knock over unsecured coral frags or small decorations while moving around the aquarium.
Compatibility & Caution
The Crowned Turbo Snail is reef safe and generally compatible with corals, fish and other peaceful invertebrates.
It is an excellent choice for reef aquariums that require additional algae control.
A few important considerations:
-
Ensure adequate algae growth is available to support its nutritional needs.
-
Supplement its diet if natural algae becomes insufficient.
-
Secure loose coral frags and lightweight decorations, as its size and strength can disturb them.
-
Avoid keeping it with aggressive snail-eating fish, large predatory wrasses and crustaceans that may attack snails.
-
Provide stable calcium and alkalinity levels to support healthy shell maintenance.
-
Avoid copper-based medications, which are toxic to marine invertebrates.

-
Maximum Size: Approximately 2–3 inches
-
Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
-
pH: 8.1–8.4
-

-
Water Hardness: Stable marine water conditions with adequate calcium and alkalinity
-
Temperament: Peaceful
-
Reef Compatibility: Reef Safe
-
Diet: Herbivore
-
Primary Role: Algae Control
Care Notes:
-
Introduce into an established aquarium with sufficient natural algae growth.
-
Provide plenty of live rock and hard surfaces for grazing.
-
Maintain stable salinity, temperature and water chemistry.
-
Avoid sudden changes in salinity, as turbo snails can be sensitive to unstable conditions.
-
Ensure the snail can right itself if accidentally overturned. Unlike some smaller snails, larger turbo snails may struggle to flip themselves back over.
-
Monitor its body condition and grazing activity to ensure it is receiving enough food.
-
Supplement with dried seaweed (Nori) or algae-based foods when natural algae becomes limited.
Diet & Food:
The Crowned Turbo Snail is primarily herbivorous and naturally grazes on algae growing on rocks and other submerged surfaces.
Its preferred foods include:
-
Green Film Algae
-
Green Hair Algae
-
Microalgae
-
Biofilm
-
Dried Seaweed (Nori)
-
Algae-Based Sinking Wafers
It is particularly useful for keeping aquarium surfaces clean by continuously grazing on available algae.
Tank Mates
Suitable tank mates include:
-
Clownfish
-
Tangs
-
Angelfish (reef-safe species)
-
Gobies
-
Blennies
-
Chromis
-
Cardinalfish
-
Fairy Wrasses
-
Cleaner Shrimp
-
Peppermint Shrimp
-
Skunk Cleaner Shrimp
-
Other Peaceful Snails
-
Hermit Crabs (with caution)
Avoid housing with aggressive snail predators such as large pufferfish, triggerfish and certain predatory wrasses. Some hermit crabs may also attack snails for their shells.
Fun Fact
Turbo snails are equipped with an exceptionally strong muscular foot that helps them cling tightly to rocks, even in areas with considerable water movement. Their powerful grazing ability makes them popular members of reef aquarium clean-up crews!
