Species:

Betta splendens (Allen Copper Male Betta)

Common Name:

Allen Copper Betta, Copper Male Betta

Origin:

Captive-bred selectively developed line (Betta splendens lineage, Southeast Asian origin)

Lifespan:

2–4 years (with proper care and stable aquarium conditions)

Appearance:

The Allen Copper Male Betta is a striking metallic variety known for its intense copper sheen that can range from warm bronze to bright metallic gold depending on lighting and lineage quality. The “Allen Copper” line is typically associated with strong, uniform metallic coverage across the body and fins, often producing a mirror-like reflective effect.

Males display long, flowing fins (commonly Halfmoon or similar ornamental fin types), with the copper coloration often intensifying near the head and fading slightly toward the tail, giving a gradient metallic glow. Under strong light, the fish can appear almost glowing with a burnished gold-copper finish.

Temperament:

Highly territorial and aggressive toward other male bettas and similarly shaped or brightly colored fish. Best kept alone unless housed in a carefully planned, peaceful community aquarium.

Tank Size:

Minimum: 5 gallons
Recommended: 10–20 gallons for optimal coloration, swimming space, and stability

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <20 ppm

Stable, clean water is essential for maintaining metallic copper intensity and fin health.

Tank Setup:

  • Gentle filtration with low current
  • Heavily planted or aquascaped environment
  • Driftwood, caves, and floating plants for shade and resting
  • Dark substrate enhances copper shine and contrast
  • Lid required (bettas are known jumpers)
  • Low-stress environment with minimal reflection and flashing light

Diet:

Carnivorous
Requires a high-protein diet to support color vibrancy and fin growth

Feeding:

  • High-quality betta pellets as staple diet
  • Frozen/live foods: bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia
  • Feed 1–2 times daily in small portions
  • Occasional fasting day recommended to prevent bloating and improve digestion

Tank Mates:

Compatible with:

  • Peaceful bottom dwellers (Corydoras, Kuhli loaches)
  • Snails
  • Select small peaceful community fish (careful monitoring required)

Avoid:

  • Other male bettas
  • Fin-nippers or aggressive species
  • Bright or similarly metallic fish that may trigger aggression

Behavior Notes:

  • Intelligent and interactive; often recognizes feeding routines
  • May flare frequently due to reflective surroundings
  • Builds bubble nests at the water surface
  • Uses labyrinth organ to breathe atmospheric air
  • Enjoys resting on leaves or broad surfaces near the top

Breeding:

Bubble nest builder species
Male cares for eggs and fry until free-swimming stage
Breeding requires a controlled, separate setup with conditioning and compatibility pairing

Care Level:

Moderate

Special Notes:

  • Copper coloration intensifies under high-quality diet and stable water conditions
  • Stress or poor water quality can dull metallic sheen significantly
  • Strong lighting enhances visual brilliance but should not be overly harsh
  • Provide surface resting spots to reduce fin fatigue
  • Regular weekly water changes (25–30%) are essential for long-term health and color stability
