Identification
The Alenquer Tiger Pleco is a beautiful South American freshwater catfish admired for its striking orange and black tiger-like markings. It is popular among pleco enthusiasts and collectors because of its vibrant coloration, distinctive patterning and manageable adult size.
Its body features an orange to reddish-orange base colour with contrasting dark brown or black stripes. It has a broad, flattened head, an armoured body and a sucker-shaped mouth.
Adult specimens typically reach approximately 4–5 inches (10–13 cm). Males may develop more prominent bristles around their cheeks and pectoral fins as they mature.
Behaviour & Role
Alenquer Tiger Plecos are generally peaceful, bottom-dwelling catfish that spend much of their time exploring driftwood, grazing on surfaces and hiding among rocks and caves.
They are primarily nocturnal, although well-acclimated specimens may become active during daylight, particularly around feeding time.
This species is a specialised wood grazer and requires driftwood as an essential part of its diet. Although generally peaceful, males can become territorial towards other plecos, particularly when competing for caves and hiding spaces.
Compatibility & Caution
Alenquer Tiger Plecos are suitable for peaceful community aquariums with appropriately sized tropical fish.
Suitable tank mates include:
-
Tetras
-
Rasboras
-
Rainbowfish
-
Corydoras
-
Peaceful Gouramis
-
Angelfish
-
Small peaceful Cichlids
-
Other peaceful community fish
Avoid aggressive, highly territorial or predatory fish. When housing multiple plecos, provide plenty of caves, driftwood and separate hiding areas.
They should not be purchased primarily for algae control, as they have specialised dietary requirements.

Fun Fact
The Alenquer Tiger Pleco is known as a wood-eating pleco because it naturally grazes on submerged wood as an important part of its diet.
Its striking orange and black tiger-like pattern makes it a highly desirable addition to specialist freshwater aquariums. Mature males also develop noticeable bristles around their cheeks and pectoral fins, and they guard their eggs inside caves during breeding.
